Attendance

Attendance in Jeffco

The importance of regular, daily school attendance as a basis for academic achievement cannot be overemphasized. Attendance is a shared responsibility of the student, the families and the school.

It is the family’s responsibility to ensure their student attends school and to notify the school when their student is absent for a legitimate reason, such as an illness or family emergency. Each family should also ensure their student’s school has their correct contact information so that the school is able to communicate about any attendance issues that may arise.

Student Attendance

Absences disrupt the learning process which directly impacts student achievement, despite attempts to make up work. The daily interaction and participation with other students in well-planned, instructional activities by dedicated, well-versed teachers enrich the student experience and lay the foundation for future success. Regular daily attendance plants those seeds of learning. The school can only teach students who are present.

Attendance Policy

Absences or tardiness resulting from temporary illness, injury, extended disability of the student or a family emergency will typically be excused. Any other excused absence, including those for an extended time period, needs to be approved by the administration prior to the absence. Students with excessive illnesses will be required to provide a written excuse from a physician. All other absences and tardies are considered unexcused.

Absences that are not phoned in by 10 a.m. are considered unexcused.

The school and district are required to comply with Colorado State Law that requires school attendance by all children ages six to 17 for 175 days unless legally excused. Students with excessive absences or tardiness will be referred for truancy action to comply with the law.

Absences from school resulting from suspension and expulsion shall be considered “unexcused.” However, students can make up their work for full credit for the time missed. It is a student’s responsibility to get make-up work from their teacher.

Tardiness

Promptness is an important quality for children to develop; students are expected to be on time. When children are tardy they must check in at the office before going to class. Tardiness disrupts the class, requires the teacher to repeat missed instruction and hinders learning for everyone. Excused tardies are for doctor appointments or family emergencies only. We ask that you make every attempt to schedule appointments outside of school hours.
